Patients who eat well during and after cancer treatment often feel better and have more energy. Eating well means getting enough calories and protein to prevent weight loss, regain strength and rebuild normal tissues. Some patients find it hard to eat well during treatment and may lose their appetite. In addition, common side effects of treatment, such as nausea and vomiting, can make eating difficult. Foods taste different to some patients. Also, people undergoing treatment may not feel like eating when they are uncomfortable or tired. Doctors, nurses and dietitians can offer advice for healthy eating during cancer treatment. Patients and their families also may want to read the National Cancer Institute's book entitled Eating Hints for Cancer Patients which contains helpful information about cancer treatment and coping with side effects.
