Making the Most of Each Day

A father, husband, friend, advocate for children, and an incredible supporter of medical education. Martin Domitrovich was all these things and more to the many who knew him. He was also a courageous fighter, battling a rare pancreatic cancer for eight years before succumbing to the disease on October 29, 2007.

Even in the midst of his fight, Mr. Domitrovich was aware of others' struggles. In July 2006, he began to work with his wife KD (Karen), to give back and show his gratitude to everyone who had helped their family. Over the next two months, Mr. and Mrs. Domitrovich organized the first annual Barn Party and Concert in support of two deserving causes-Equestrian Connection, a therapeutic riding program for children with disabilities, and nursing education at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

The first annual Barn Party raised $50,000 to support the continuing education of nurses at the Lurie Cancer Center. Deemed "a celebration of the time they had together" by the Domitrovich's, the party featured a live auction and a performance by Dennis DeYoung of Styx.

On September 15, 2007, Mrs. Domitrovich joined with Equestrian Connection again to host the second annual Barn Party. A gathering of family and friends featuring the music of the Little River Band, the event again raised more than $50,000 for nursing education

"Oncology nurses are some of the hardest working, most dedicated caregivers we have ever met. Our party will help support the continuing education and nurse practitioner program for these true 'angels,'" Mr. and Mrs. Domitrovich commented in 2006.

"To Continue His Legacy..."

The third annual Barn Party is planned for September 6, 2008, now in memory of Mr. Domitrovich. Equestrian Connection plans to "continue his legacy with quality and pride as his spirit will remain with us in our daily work with those with disabilities. His strength is a reminder to us all to never give up."
