International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)

Dear Colleague,

Please join us and our leading expert faculty for the Eighth International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Research Symposium, "A Global Problem: Cancer Pain from the Laboratory to the Bedside," June 4-5, 2009, at the Hughes Auditorium in the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago. Our warmest thanks are extended to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University for hosting this Symposium.

The 8th IASP Research Symposium will feature internationally recognized basic and clinical scientists who will discuss the latest research findings related to cancer pain, ranging from the underlying biology of pain due to cancer and its treatment, as well as issues surrounding opioid hyperalgesia and tolerance. The design and conduct of cancer pain clinical trials, as well as the most current research in psychological and educational interventions, will also be addressed.

Last October, the IASP launched the 2008-2009 Global Year Against Cancer Pain. We are pleased to offer the 8th IASP Research Symposium as part of this global effort to raise awareness about and to focus attention on reducing cancer-related pain and suffering for people around the world. We hope you will join our faculty of cancer pain experts by becoming involved locally in activities and other ways to draw attention to this vital issue.

The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for in-depth discussion and analysis. Therefore, attendance is limited to 200 individuals. To ensure your participation, please register early!

We are committed to making the 8th IASP Research Symposium the most productive educational opportunity available on research in cancer pain. Please watch for a book of the proceedings, which will be published by the IASP Press. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago for this important symposium!

Sincerely,

Rae F. Bell, MD, PhD, BA Hons
Judith A. Paice, RN, PhD, FAAN
Eija A. Kalso, MD, PhD, DMed Sci
