The RADAR-Walgreens Pharmacy Collaboration

The RADAR team has recently developed collaboration with Walgreens Pharmacy to evaluate and report comprehensive case series information for thalidomide- and lenalidomide-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) among patients with cancer who receive a prescription for thalidomide or lenalidomide at Walgreens Pharmacy in Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH). For each patient who fills a prescription for thalidomide or lenalidomide at Walgreens Pharmacy in NMH, the pharmacist will verbally collect information from the patient.

The study will involve review of existing patient records in the Walgreens prescription database to identify patients taking either thalidomide or lenalidomide who also may be undergoing treatment for VTE. This will be done by focused analysis of thalidomide or lenalidomide prescribing matched with focused query of anticoagulation used to treat VTE. De-identified information from the Walgreens database will be provided to the RADAR investigators and abstracted into standardized case report forms.

The RADAR team will collect de-identified data from Walgreens. Case reports will be electronically stored in a central data repository maintained at Northwestern University. To generate full case series information, several follow-up data sources will be used: proceedings of national medical conferences and electronic databases, published literature, clinical case conferences, FDA databases, and FDA alerts.
