The Associate Director for Administration is appointed by and reports to the Director of the Cancer Center. The Associate Director position in the Lurie Cancer Center is responsible for overall administrative operations including finance and accounting, purchasing, human resources, information systems, plant operations, research safety and security, public affairs and communications, and office support systems, as well as oversight of development programs and affiliated organization relations. The Associate Director for Administration is a full member of the Senior Leadership, and via membership on the Executive Committee and Leadership Group, is a key contributor to setting strategic direction, policy and priorities for the Lurie Cancer Center.
Mr. Volpe received a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois in 1978. From 1979-89 he held a series of positions with progressive responsibility at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, prior to accepting his current position in the Lurie Cancer Center. With over 20 years of experience, he has a well-established reputation in both health care and cancer center administration.
Mr. Volpe serves on External Advisory Boards of other NCI-designated cancer centers and is actively involved with the American Cancer Society, having served as a past chairman of the Board of the Illinois Division. In 2007, he was awarded the St. George Medal, the highest honor awarded by the American Cancer Society Divisions, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, service and commitment to the organization. In addition, he is currently on the Board of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Mr. Volpe works closely with the Director and Senior Leadership on the Lurie Cancer Center's continued growth and development and plays a prominent role in the governance and strategic planning functions of the Lurie Cancer Center.
