The Career Development Program is intended to recruit junior faculty investigators at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago to conduct prostate cancer translational research projects and to pursue careers in the field. Career development investigators (CDA) are selected after careful review of their credentials and potential to develop an independent career in prostate cancer research. Dr. Lee assigns each CDA investigator a primary mentor, with whom the CDA meets monthly, and a secondary mentor who meets with the CDA quarterly. Special efforts have been made to emphasize the recruitment of women and minorities to the SPORE Career Development Program. CDA investigators who are making significant progress after the first year are eligible for additional years of funding.

The specific aims of the Program are:

  • To maintain the administrative structure for the Career Development Program.
  • To identify and select career development investigators.
  • To guide, monitor and evaluate career development investigators.

Procedure for selection of Career Development Investigators:

  1. Solicitation via letters to Departmental Chairs at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago requesting nominations.
  2. Nomination of faculty by Departmental Chairs.
  3. Faculty submit 2-3 page research plan and letter of recommendation.
  4. Review of applications by the SPORE Executive Committee.
  5. Funding decisions made with approval from Internal Advisory Committee.
  6. Award letters sent.
