Doctor Lewandowski's primary clinical research interest has been in liver-directed therapies for primary and secondary hepatic malignancies. Most of his publications have focused on transcatheter intra-arterial therapies (e.g., radioembolization and chemoembolization) for these unresectable malignancies. Some of this work has been translated from pre-clinical studies that he has collaborated on with his colleague, Dr. Reed Omary.
Dr. Lewandowski is also active in pre-clinical research. In Dr. Omary's laboratory, Dr. Lewandowski is studying novel, image-guided therapies for liver cancer. He recently received a grant from the American Cancer Society (Illinois Division) to study MRI-Guided Nanoablation for hepatocellular carcinoma, a technique developed within the lab. Dr. Lewandowski has also been awarded a Pilot Grant from the Society of Interventional Radiology. With this grant, Dr. Lewandowski's team was able to create an animal model for pancreatic cancer in which to test novel therapeutic agents.
