Today, scientists have an increased understanding of the connections between genes and cancer. In addition, it has become possible to test individuals for the presence of genes associated with some types of cancer, including breast cancer and colon cancer. However, it is difficult for patients to know when to consider a test and what difference it will make to know their genetic status. Discussion with a genetic counselor is helpful for patients who have concerns about cancer genetics. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has helpful information targeted to patients who are considering genetic counseling or testing. |
