Maithel Named Chief Surgical Officer at Lurie Cancer Center

We are pleased to announce that Shishir Maithel, MD, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery, has been appointed Chief Surgical Officer of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

In this role, Dr. Maithel will lead the coordination and strategic expansion of surgical oncology clinical trials across the Lurie Cancer Center and the Northwestern Medicine Cancer Care Network. He will work in close partnership with the cancer center’s Clinical Trials Office and faculty leaders to strengthen infrastructure, accelerate accruals, and align efforts across disease programs and locations.

Dr. Maithel brings significant national experience to this position, having served as Principal Investigator on multiple National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) trials and held leadership roles within cooperative group networks.  He is currently serving as Chair of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group's Surgery Committee and is a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Hepatobiliary Task Force.  His expertise and collaborative approach will be instrumental in advancing our shared vision to expand access to innovative, high-quality cancer clinical trials throughout the region.
