Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are common, but usually are not cancerous. If the nodule is cancerous, thyroid cancer cells can spread into normal thyroid tissue and nearby blood and lymph vessels.

The most common types of thyroid cancer are papillary and follicular. Other less common types include medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer often has no symptoms, but it may be identified by swollen lymph nodes, painful or difficult swallowing, or a lump at the base of the neck.

Lurie Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team of specialists are experts in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of every type of thyroid cancer.
