Our Catchement Area

cancer-in-focus.jpg

The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University catchment area includes nine counties in northeastern Illinois with a population of more than 8.6 million. As an NCI-designated cancer center, we strive to evaluate the cancer burden within our catchment area and use this data to inform research and outreach initiatives.

Researchers and community members can use these applications to evaluate the cancer burden and improve cancer outcomes through evidence-based interventions and community engagement in the diverse populations across our catchment area.

Cancer InFocus, developed by the Community Impact Office at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, is a platform aimed at facilitating the understanding of cancer burden. It gathers and filters data from various publicly available sources such as the US Census Bureau and CDC Places. This data is then integrated into the Cancer InFocus Shiny application to create interactive mapping applications. These applications provide a wide scope of cancer burden and health determinants data on incidence, mortality, sociodemographic, economic and insurance, environment, housing and transportation, disparities, and screening and risk factors.

Using Data for Research

For research purposes, data from Cancer InFocus can be integrated with datasets exported from the NM EDW. To request the data, please reach out to the Quantitative Data Science Core (QDSC) by filling out the  QDSC Project Description Form.
