Cancer-Focused Research
Dr. Sporn is a physician-scientist with a longstanding interest and track record of investigation in cellular and molecular mechanisms of lung inflammation, injury and repair, as well as regulation of innate immunity and pulmonary host defense. A major focus his laboratory research is on molecular mechanisms by which hypercapnia (elevation of CO2 in blood and tissues), which often develops in patients with acute and chronic lung diseases, suppresses anti-bacterial and anti-viral lung host defense. Dr. Sporn's clinical focus is on interstitial lung disease, including the granulomatous disease, sarcoidosis. He directs the Northwestern Medicine Sarcoidosis Center of Excellence, and conducts clinical trials of novel therapies for the disease.
